Chinese Agriculture & WTO

Ensuring the well-being of the 900-million farmers is now the biggest concern in China. In its latest work conference last month, the central government decided to put on top agenda the increase of farmers¡¯ income, in line with the government¡¯s new five-year national development plan starting this year. Under that plan, China will continue to consolidate agriculture as the basis of the national economy, in the hope of guaranteeing a sustained development of the rural economy, food safety of the whole nation and continued national stability.
What are the potential dangers of a continuous decline in farmers¡¯ income growth? What are measures needed to reverse the downward trend? And what the challenges and chances?
People in the Know talks to Professor Han Jun, Deputy Director of the Rural Development Institute, under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
