| Lindex is a Swedish company founded in 1954. It mainly sells
children clothing, lady's fashion , and women's underwear. Nevertheless, the person in
charge of Hong Kong Branch, Joakim Holmberg, says that the environmental protection
awareness is their real brand and image. And this awareness is applied throughout the
company, including its internal operation of shops, office efficiency, products package
and delivery and so on. The Green Office Policy of Lindex's Hong Kong Branch
is mainly concerned with power consumption and the processing of waste material. The green
policy is enforced through providing all staff with simple and basic training about
environmental protection awareness. Holmberg believes that they should begin their work
from their company. They should hold stuff meeting every year and concentrate the research
on simple things of great importance that can be put into practice in the office. Company
stuff can even be awarded in different ways, such as with bonus, for good performance.
"Environmental production without basic concept and perfect waste material
treatment system is bound to fail. Though the government is likely to do so, it will lose
the campaign for the lack of competence." Holmberg has his unique view on doing
business in Hong Kong while protecting the environment as well, "The government must
take the initiative, and allow private environmental protection company to make profit. I
do not mean those consultative companies , but those that are really preparing to deal
with rubbish or those companies that develop green products. Legislation is not surely
effective. The problem of environmental protection still can not be solved even if the
government make new laws or enforce some strict principles; besides people can not make
profit through environmental protection, instead, it usually cost people money. So the
determination of the company and investment could be crucial. Eventually company
staff¡¯s attitudes toward environmental protection plays an important role in
environmental protection. When they go home after work and teach their family members and
children these concepts they learned in the office, that means the success of our
training." According to Lindex¡¯s experience in the past, company staff
were usually resistant to environmental protection rules at the beginning, and they said
it was troublesome because they did not understand its effect and significance yet. Then
they began to be used to obeying these rules and fond of this kind of sense of
responsibility gradually.
For instance, under each employee¡¯s table there is a recycling paper
cabinet. And it is used to store used paper. Then retrieving company come and collect
these used paper periodically and use it to produce for further usage. In the company
there are also individual air conditioning cabinet with separate switches and names of the
working stuff. Each member must turn off his own switch before he leaves. In fact,
environmental protection is merely a kind of life habit. In our daily life we like to use
Post-it to write memos. While in Index, staff members use the paper chunks cut from a
piece of used A4 paper. The photo-copy machine is equipped with an extra tray in which
staff members keep printing paper with one page used. Next time the unused page will be
used. Company staff use altering pen instead of altering liquid which causes pollution to
ozone layer. The company with such rules naturally has a form of process which is used to
take notes about the monthly power consumption, paper consumption and the situation about
retrieving of deserted articles. And company staff can take these notes for reference.
Lindex¡¯s another special point is that the company purchases goods
only from those suppliers which care about environmental protection. This is the same case
for factories in China. Lindex purchases materials only from those factories that do not
cause water pollution. They go to the country and inspect factories, workers' salary, work
time and the safety of working condition. They also examine the processing of polluted
water to see if it is up to standard. Only those competent factories can co-operate with
Lindex. This is an effective way and it offers factories the motive to earn money and at
the same time popularize environmental protection.
"Companies in western countries always compete in the quality and price of
their products while what we value are environmental protection and our social
responsibility. The pamphlets in our shops can tell our customers where and what condition
under which our products are produced and so on. We will constantly renew ourselves, our
shops and our suppliers¡¯ situation of environmental protection. In this way we
can communicate with each other and we can even deliver our information to our customers
and their subconscious. This is the object of Lindex."
Some people think that recycling products are generally more expensive then other
products. Lindex will try to do well both in price and environmental protection
simultaneously. Because Lindex sells not only its products and quality but also their
message to society, environment, and the feasibility of a green office. In the respect of
customers, Lindex hopes that they may feel that they are making their contribution to
society while they are enjoying our products at lower price and with good quality. This is
the mission of Lindex. |
