Transportation


Kunming is the transportation hub of the Yunnan Province, with links to all parts of the province via road, rail and air. Kunming has become an important gateway, linking China to Southeast Asia, South Asia, as well as the pacific region. The province also has 10 national ports, 8 provincial ports and 20 highways linking neighboring countries.

Air Transportation

There are eight civil airports in Yunnan apart from Kunming - Dali, Lijiang, Baoshan, Mangshi, Zhantong, Simao, and Xishuangbanna. A new airport, Lincang airport, is now under construction. Kunming is one of the five major international airports in China. It operates 7 provincial routes and more than 40 domestic and international routes. Passengers can fly from Kunming to many major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu. They can also fly to Hong Kong, Rangoon, Bangkok, ChiangMai, Vientiane, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Railway Transportation

The railways linking Kunming constitute the southwest part of the nation's network. With Kunming at the center, there are five major lines:

  • Guiyang-Kunming railway: an electrified railway linking Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province to Kunming
  • Chengdu-Kunming railway: linking Chengdu, capital of Sichan to Kunming
  • Nanning-Kunming railway: an electrified rail line linking Nanning, capital of Guangxi Province, to Kunming; also the nearest line to the seaport
  • Guangtong-Dali railway: linking Guangtong, on the Chengdu-Kunming line, with Dali
  • Kunming-Hekou railway: a narrow-gauge railway linking Kunming to Hekou

Highway Transportation

Yunnan has a total of 100,000 kilometers of highway; the third-largest road network in China. These highways link Yunnan with other provinces and other countries. An expressway linking Kunming and Qujing has been put into operation.

The Kunming Central Bus Station, located on Beijing Road, southwest of Kunming Railway Station, is the largest bus depot in Yunnan. Over 500 buses leave this depot daily. There are various kinds of buses, including sleepers and luxury buses. Ticketing is computerized and tickets may be purchased up to one week ahead.

Urban Transportation

There are about 1,000 public buses operating on 56 routes in Kunming City, of which nine routes are self-ticketing, and 115 buses are self-ticketing buses or double-deck buses.

Taxis are an important part of the urban transportation system. Currently there are over 6,000 taxis in the city.

Taxi fare-charging standard: For standard cars, the fee is 1.6 yuan per kilometer with a base charge of seven yuan for the first three kilometers. For luxury cars, the fee is 1.8 yuan per kilometer with a base charge of eight yuan for the first three kilometers. For long-distance transport, please negotiate with the driver.

Yunnan Tourist Transport Station:

Located at the Provincial Gym on East Dongfeng Road, the station uses air-conditioned luxury buses for transportation.
