White house confirms Chinese Vice-premier Qian Qichen to visit

Vice Premier Qian Qichen will visit the United States at the invitation of the US government for a five-day visit starting March 18 during which he will meet with US President George W. Bush, the White House confirmed Friday.

Qian, who will be the highest ranking Chinese official to hold talks in Washington for two years, is scheduled to meet with Bush on March 22. He will also visit New York.

As the former foreign minister, Qian supervises the Chinese diplomacy.

Premier Zhu Rongji visited Washington in April 1999.

With the upcoming visit, the new administration of George W. Bush will have the chance to acquaint itself with one of China's top policymakers and to convey concerns.
