| KUNMING _ Besides magnificent scenes and wonderful flowers, Yunnan is now
also the home of exquisite modern fashion. The '99 China Kunming Garment & Fashion
Show, the fourth of its kind, opened yesterday at the International Trade Centre.
The four-day exhibition, the largest fashion show in Southwest China, showcases more
than 300 brands from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong SAR, including some renowned
trademarks such as Romon, Firs, Fushen and Yupu.
A large fashion performance evening about China's history on the catwalk was held last
night.
Several famous models, including Zhou Jun, Ma Yanli and Xie Dongna, displayed costumes
designed by Zhang Zhaoda and Wu Haiyan, two top-class fashion designers of China.
A seminar on Southwest China's fashion market is also expected to be held this morning.
The fashion show is playing an important role in bringing modern fashion trends from
coastal regions and promoting the costume industry in Yunnan, and even in the whole
Southwest China, said Jiang Hengjie, chairman of China Garment Industry Association.
Yunnan has an unparalleled potential to boost its garment industry as long as it
combines modern dress designs and manufacturing trends with the traditional costumes of
local ethnic minorities, Jiang noted.
In the last decade, Yunnan's local brands, such as Enjoy, Slidon and Birch, have been
emerging gradually.
The Birch brand especially absorbs the spirit of Yunnan's ethnic costumes and
accessories and combines fashionable style with traditional hand-stitched and embroidered
details. It has been warmly welcomed in domestic and overseas markets.
Dong Xiaoyun, president of Kunming International Trade Centre, said the annual fashion
show is striving to reshape itself into a world-class fashion festival to better explore
Yunnan's ethnic costume resources. |
