Along with the deepening of reform, since March of 1992 China has opened the
city of Hunchun of Jilin Province, the cities of Heihe and Suifenhe of Heilongjiang
Province, the cities of Manzhouli and Erenhot of Inner Mongolious Region, the cities of
Tacheng, Bole and Yining of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the cities of Hekou,
Wanding and Ruili of Yunnan Province, the city of Pingxiang and the town of Dongxing of
the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In June and July of the same year, the
state opened 7 capitals of border and coastal provinces and
autonomous regions (Nanning, Kunming, Urumqi, Hohhot, Harbin, Changchun and Shijiazhuang),
and 11 capitals of inland provinces and autonomous regions, including Taiyuan, Hefei,
Xining and Yinchuan.
These border cities are well situated to display their advantage in
developing economic and trade cooperation with neighboring countries.
In accordance with State Council regulations, these borders cities can set up
their own border economic cooperation zones and implement preferential policies similar to
those in the coastal economic and technological development zones.According to a news
release from the Ministry of Public Security, China opened another 56 counties and cities
to foreigners with the approval of the State Council. By the end of 1998 1,392 areas had
been opened to foreigners. |
