Beijing has made remarkable improvements in the quality of its construction
projects, said Wu Xuyu, director of the Chinese capital's Urban and Rural Construction
Committee. Yesterday marked the first day of a two-day session of the Standing
Committee of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress (BMPC).
At the end of the 1980s, 50 per cent of Beijing's construction projects were found to
have an assortment of minor problems such as leaks and paint chips.
After eight years of efforts by the municipal government, the rate was decreased to
merely 2 per cent in 1998.
The improvements continued this year. A recent city-wide spot check on construction
quality indicated an excellence rate of 20 per cent. The latter was up 4.3 per cent over
that of last year.
Wang Zongli, head of the BMPC Standing Committee's Subcommittee of Urban Construction
and Environmental Protection, said the municipal government still needed to carry on its
efforts.
For example, designing was still without an effective supervision system. |
