While a price war is poised to break out among air-conditioner makers
in China, Chongqing-based Changhong, a leading Chinese air-conditioner manufacturer is
scooping up a commanding share of an overseas market.
After two years in the Indonesian market, the Changhong Group has become the top name in
air-conditioners in the country. According to a survey, Changhong's products surpass many
other brands in technology and quality, enabling it to win over Indonesian consumers.
Changhong management said Indonesia was the first stop on its journey into the global
market. In 1999, Changhong's export volume to the South-East Asian country skyrocketed by
9 hundred per cent over the previous year.
By September 2000, Changhong started production in Indonesia and now have a greater market
share than similar Japanese-made appliances. Other air-conditioner brands competing for
the market include Meidi, Gree, Hai'er, Japan-based NEC and Indonesian makers.
